hladini,paavani,nalini,these three chaneels went towards eastern side. seeta,sindhu,suchakshu. these three channels went towards western side. these are the 6 channels of ganga seventh one went with bhageeratha to rasatalam  for his uncles prayaschittam.
the moral behind the ganga avataranam is don't be proud of any quality in yourself, ganges , because of ahnakaram she from satya loka, down to swarga from swarga down to himalaya from himalaya down to rasatala. Ganga followed a great fall towards rasatalam because of ahankaram (proudish feelings). She thought to drown Lord Shiva also with her speed and mass but finally she was arrested by Lord Shiva.

why rudra called as shiva

lord rudra halted the speed of heavenly river ganga,  when ganga was told that lord rudra will hold your speed she the ganga proudly thought that she would drown even lord rudra with her force and speed, but to her surprise when she entered the jata (hair scalp of rudra deva) she lost her self and was trapped in Rudra deva's jata.It was  like a small child entering a biggest forest. The beauty of rudra deva's jata made Ganga to feel like staying there only and keep seeing the beauty of the jata.
when Rudra deva had Ganga the purified river which was born at lord narayana's feet, which was purified with the touch of the holy feet of lord narayana, rudra deva was named shiva.shiva means pure, although lord rudra deva was pure with the knowledge still he became further pure by having Holy Ganga on his head, later again by the request of bhageeratha ganga was sent to earth.

brahma gave ganga as boon

Lord brahma gave holy ganga as a boon to bhageeratha. the risk factor in bringing ganga was if it falls directly on the surface of earth then it would imbalance the whole earth by its great speed and cut the surface and enter the rasatalam directly. so there was a need of a person who would slow down the speed by bridging the holy river and without harming the earth's balance Ganga would flow slowly.

amshumaan firstly ruled the kingdom when his son dilip grown up and got the capacity of ruling the kingdom, amshumaan went to do penance for ganga penance for 32 thousands years for the sake of his 60000 uncles,later he went to heaven. dlip was unable to continue the penance,  king dilip ruled the kingdom for 32000 years and because of lack of mental peace about his grand uncles he died and went to heaven, later his son bhagiratha continued the penance for several thousands of years by which Lord brahma was happy and decided to send ganga to earth along with bhagiratha.

sagara's IInd wife son asamanjas

King Sagara was having two wives, the 60000 sagara putras were the sons of one wife, and asamajas was the son of second wife.Asamanja was a yogi from child hood he didn't wanted  to rule the king dom but do penance for Sri Hari, to avoid the society and its contact he used to throw small children into Sarayu river for this reason King sagara boycotted asamanjas from the kinddom later when Asamanajas was going away he brought back the children who were drowned in sarayu river with his yogic powers.
 Because of this reason he didn't do the penance but Asamanajas's son Amshumaan was with hid grand father King Sagara he was the successor of King Sagara to the ayodhya king dom later continued the penance of his grand father king sagara to bring river ganga to earth.

For thoudsands of years King sagara did penance in bringing Holy river Ganga, but as per the kaaladharma he has to go to heaven, his grandson amshumaan did the penance did'nt succeed, his son King dilip did penance but he also succumbed to kaaladharma, lastly bhageeratha continued the penance and was successful because of this reason we call river Ganga as Bhaageerathi. while we do bath we have to reminisce this story of Holy river Ganga and do batha in result we get punyam of doing Ganga snaanam.

sagara did penance for ganges

As per the story king sagara thought of doing ashwamedha yaagam, but for the destruction of 60000 most strongest sagara putraas devatas nabbed the horse for the sacrifice, all of the 60000 sagara putras went in search of the horse but didn't find it later they thought of searching the horse in rasatala and started digging the earth in result the ocean got enlarged, after going to rasatalam they found the horse near Lord Kapila who was doing the penance for the peace of the world, in offensive act sagara putra behaved indecently with Lord kapila and were turned in ashes by the Lord, later sagara sent his grand son to search the horse he went to rasaatala and prayed the Lord Kapila and learned that Sacred river ganga has to come to rassatalam for the uddharam(heaven going purpose) sagara putras. for this reason King sagara started penance for the holy river Ganga but didn't succeed. remaining story in my next post.

why the name sagara came for king sagara.

Sagara was born along with poison GARA means poison Sa-GARA means along with poison. He was given poison by his many step mothers to kill him but with the pleasant blessing of OURVA rushi he was saved but took birth along with poison so the name sagara came to him. Later when he was grown up he defeated all the kshatriya kings who defeated his father and was about to kill all the enemies but with respect towards Guru Vashishta he stopped killing but forcibly converted the kshatriyas in to Mlecchas , aahunas etc with permanent beards, no mustache with shaved heads etc. Later when he was doing Ashwamedha Yagna his 60000 sons went in search for the ceremony horse up to rasaatalam by digging the earth and enlarging the ocean, because of this reason the ocean is called as SAAGARA.

how saagara & sagara related?

sagara is an ikshwaku king who was performing an ashwamedha yaga. The horse which was meant for the yaagam was stolen by devatas. The 60.000 sons of sagara went in search of the horse while in search they unearthed the earth by digging with their nails with their power the saagara(ocean) got enlarged. Because of sagara's sons enlarged the ocean since  then ocean or sea god was named SAAGARA.

krishna killed narakasura

1.krishna killed narakasura, when narakasura used shataghni given by brahma on krishna, off-course the shataghni can't do any harm to krishna but as a maintain respect towards brahma's boon, krishna was hit by it, krishna appeared to be uncautious in the mean time satyabhaama used shaaranga dhanus and fought with narakasura making him helpless later krishna used sudarshana chakra and killed narakasura. satyabhama fought and krishna killed narakasura.
2.kusha and  lava are the names of shishyas of valmiki rushi, they chanted ramayana before all rushis and sri rama in rama's yagna. the reason behind their names is valmiki rushi used darbha and made balaraksha to the twins eldest kush was used the top part of darbha which is called as kushamu and to do raksha to the younger one lava was used the lower part of the darbha which is called as lava, so the names kusha and lava were named to the sons of sri rama and sita

As we learn through Sri Vishwamitra's history as he beacame brahma rushi when he did penance facing eastern direction and lord indra is the controller and head of eastern side so, as the trilokaadhipati indra gives success for our karyams done towards the direction of east as he is the top most devata when compared to others deities excluding narayana,brahma, rudra and paarvati.
